FOREST SERVICE: Rain helps contain fires in national forests

ASHEVILLE — With recent rain and snowfall aiding containment efforts, fire crews have concluded active firefighting operations. Crews will continue to monitor the fire containment lines and patrol the area for any lingering hot spots, according to a press release from the U.S. Forest Service.
Unseasonably warm conditions and low humidities later this week increases the fire risk for much of North Carolina. The public is urged to use extra caution and check with local officials for information on any restrictions before any outdoor burning.
The Falls Dam Fire ( about 505 acres) in the Uwharrie National Forest, Montgomery County, was 85% contained as of Thursday.
The Ramshorn Fire (about 110 acres) in the Croatan National Forest, Carteret County, was fully contained.
The Hicks Cemetery Fire ( about 198 acres) in the Pisgah National Forest, Haywood County, was 50% contained as of Thursday.
All other reported fires have been contained.
The Hicks Cemetery Fire in the Pigeon River Gorge experienced challenges from sustained winds yesterday resulting in spotting. Crews were able to isolate and contain all hot spots at four acres. Moisture continues to aid in suppression efforts.
The Bates Trail #723 is currently closed due to the Falls Dam Fire. Visitors are asked to avoid this trail until further notice.
