The Stanly Grill, owned by G.C. Welch, opened in March 1942. It was located just below the Stanly Theatre on West Main Street in Albemarle. In early August 1945, Welch sold the business to W.W. Ledbetter. Due to health reasons, the Ledbetters sold the business to Frank Lee in June 1946. Lee then sold it back to the Ledbetters in August 1947. It is a little unclear what happened next, but it looks like by October 1947 the business was being operated by J.F. Mauldin & Son and in July 1950 it was owned by Eugene Eudy. Oxy’s Grill replaced Stanly Grill in March 1951, but it does not seem to have been open for long. In July 1952, a big auction was held where all the equipment and fixtures from Stanly Grill were for sale. Today’s picture, courtesy of John Williams, shows Milton Brown and his Frigidaire refrigerators at the Albemarle Music Store. The “Grill” sign for Stanly Grill can be seen in the background. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
