The South Stanly men’s basketball season ended Friday in the second round of the NCHSAA 1A state playoff in a loss at Eastern Randolph.

South, the No. 10 seed in the West, fell behind after one quarter and was outscored over the first three quarters by the host Wildcats, losing 68-59.

Yadkin Valley Conference MVP Gavyn Miller led South (17-9) with 24 points while Cohen Whitley added 14 and Jayden Woods had 11.

Timothy Brower was the top scorer for Eastern (18-8) with 30 points while Julian Brooks added 23.

“Eastern Randolph is difficult to guard,” South head coach Sean Whitley said. “Brower can create and finish from all spots, and Brooks is a monster inside. We hung most of the night, but just couldn’t get enough stops.”

South finished second overall in the YVC this season, earning the conference’s top spot in the playoffs.

Whitley said he was “super proud of this team, especially the seniors. Following up a 23-win season with 17 wins is great. Our seniors have established a culture, that hopefully we can continue to build on.”

South graduates several seniors this season: Miller, Whitley, Cam Lilly, Jaxon Valler and Ethan Gaddy.
