Albemarle women advance to third round of state playoffs with home win

Entering Friday’s second-round playoff contest, the host Albemarle Bulldogs women’s basketball team had been outscoring opponents by 35.1 points per game.

Albemarle has scored on average 66.1 points per game while allowing opponents to score 31.1 points per contest.

The Bulldogs increased the team’s active win streak to 15 and bested its scoring average, pulling away in the second half for an 83-41 win against the No. 14 seeded Hiwassee Dam Eagles.

Amari Baldwin continued to move up the ladder of the state’s all-time career scoring records with 26 points to lead four in double figures for Albemarle (24-4). She has 2,388 career points through Friday’s win, putting her at 17th overall in the state record book in career points.

Jasmine Brown added 24 points, Bianca Robinson scored 15 and Jordyn Crump had 10.

Olivia McNabb was the top scorer for the Eagles (18-7) with 14 points and Brinkley Payne added 12.

Albemarle outscored Hiwassee Dam 22-15 in the first quarter and led at halftime 45-28. The Bulldogs then pulled away in the third, outscoring the Eagles 30-6 in the quarter.

The Bulldogs host Uwharrie Charter (21-7) Tuesday night at 6 in the third round of the state playoffs. The sixth-seeded Eagles won at home Friday versus No. 11 Highlands, 47-37.
