According to the Jan. 20, 1948 Stanly News & Press, the Kingville High School band was formed in February 1947. At first, the students would go to Badin at night to work with Leo Gabriel, who was the band director for the Carolina Aluminum Company. By early 1948, the band, now under the direction of Mrs. E.E. Waddell, had grown to more than 20 students. Today’s picture is from John T. Williams Jr.’s “Ivey Collection.” The students in the photo are: Clarinets: Leacy Mae Turner, Alberta McCoy; Saxophone: Violet McLendon, Joe Freeman; Alto: Bessie Mae Harris; French Horn: Peggy Krone; Trumpets: James Barns, Billy Hearne, Douglass Snuggs, B.J. Moss; Cornets: Charles Crump, Ben Davis; Trap Drum: John L. Clyburn; Bass Drum: Reginald Lee; Bass Horn: Franklin Funderburk; Cymbal: George Ingram; Trombones: Rachael Nance, Lenzy Parker, Earl Davis. Mrs. Waddell can be seen standing on the left.
