The Auctioneer Association of North Carolina (AANC) Winter Conference saw strong representation from students and instructors of the Carolina Auction Academy (CAA) at Stanly Community College (SCC).
The event highlighted the achievements of CAA graduates and celebrated the enduring legacy of its founders, Bill and Betty O’Neal.
The O’Neals, who established Carolina Auction Academy in 2005, were honored for their combined 65 years of dedication to the auction profession as they officially announced their retirement.
Reflecting on their career, Bill O’Neal stated, “It’s never easy to step away from something you love, but watching our students succeed over the years has been incredibly rewarding. Since its founding, Carolina Auction Academy has trained approximately 600 students from North and South Carolina, many of whom have started their own businesses, collaborated with former classmates, and even earned AANC state champion titles.”
CAA alumni continue to make an impact within AANC leadership, including directors Bucky Hathcock (2003 State Champion) and Laura Furr; Chairman of the Board David Bailey (a member of CAA’s inaugural class); AANC President Michael Parker (CAA instructor); and AANC Past President Kelly Williams.
This year’s AANC state competition also featured several teams with CAA connections. Michael Parker and his son Matthew took home first-place honors, while Andy Kearns/Patrick Hudson and Kyle McDowell/Dakota Evans also participated. Evans was named rookie champion, and McDowell earned the runner-up position.
Adding to the conference’s educational value, SCC’s Joe Pollard was among the distinguished presenters, sharing his expertise with attendees.
Looking ahead, the AANC Summer Summit will be hosted in Albemarle in August, with former CAA graduates invited to attend at no cost.
Though the O’Neals are stepping away after years of devoted service, the Carolina Auction Academy will continue to thrive under the leadership of former students. The next class will begin in September, ensuring the program’s lasting impact on the auction industry.
