Stanly County has a new all-time career basketball scoring leader.
After last week’s road win at North Rowan, Albemarle women’s basketball senior point guard Amari Baldwin broke Stanly’s all-time scoring mark, regardless of gender. The previous record, set by North Stanly guard Bryson Childress in 2018, was 2,187 points.
Her latest accomplishment was celebrated at home Friday night in a conference win over Gray Stone. She was honored at the end of the game, along with teammate Jasmine Brown, who reached a milestone last week scoring her 1,000th career point.
Despite setting the record, Baldwin said, “I feel like there is more to do this season. We’ve still got to get to states and win it all.”
She added she really did not feel a sense of relief setting the record, and her focus was more on what lies ahead for the Bulldogs this season.
Including a non-conference win versus 4A Hickory Ridge Saturday by a score of 56-48, the Bulldogs enter the final week of the regular season 18-4 overall and 8-1 in conference play, tied with Union Academy for first in the Yadkin Valley Conference.
Through Saturday, Baldwin has 2,239 career points, putting her 29th overall in the NCHSAA record book, two points behind Tarboro’s Marquetta Dickens, who scored 2,241 from 1999 to 2003.
Albemarle is currently ranked fifth in the 1A Western Region rankings by MaxPreps. The Bulldogs play North Stanly Tuesday night at Pfeiffer, then host Montgomery Central Wednesday night.
