South Stanly High School senior Michael Huneycutt has added his name to the ranks of local wrestlers who have 100 wins or more.
Huneycutt, who reached that milestone Feb. 1, now has 101 wins.
“I started wrestling early in age. I did AAU with Mr Curlee. I really got into it in my freshman year. I trained non-stop in season and off season,” said Huneycutt, who is now in the 165-pound weight class.
“Junior year was when I started to get really good and understanding wrestling. My weight class has shifted a lot throughout my high school year.
“Wrestling has taught me discipline and patience.”
Coach Tyler Balmas said Huneycutt has been a “leader by example.”
“He never gets upset the few times he does lose, keeps his grades up in the classroom, stays out of trouble and is willing to help me with whatever I need on or off the mat,” Balmas said.
The coach said the last South wrestler to pass 100 wins was Ranfere Garcia in 2022. He noted that junior Ikey Holt is at 98 career wins, looking to pass 100 at regionals.
