In April 1942, there was a fire in the Wiscassett School Building that was located at the corner of North First Street and Glenn Street. The city had hoped to rebuild a school at that location but due to World War II, they were not allowed to do so. A few years later, circa 1945, several executives with the Wiscassett Mills Company recognized the need for a community center. After visiting other nearby communities to study several options, they decided to fund a building for a Young Men’s Christian Association (Y.M.C.A.). Construction on the new building began Nov. 26, 1949. Initially, attempts were made to use portions of the shell of the Wiscassett school building, but these walls proved to be unstable. The building was finished by early July 1950. A formal reception and ceremony to officially open the new building was held on July 16. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
