Locust Elementary PTA has completed the first in a series of updates to the school’s playground.
After weeks of being unable to use their old playground equipment, Locust students were thrilled to play on their new playground equipment just before Christmas break.
The new play system accommodates 43 students and includes three slides and a rock climbing wall. In addition to the new system, Locust Elementary PTA replaced steel platforms on an existing system and added nine inches of mulch to the entire play area.
The next phase of the playground updates will include a half basketball court, outdoor volleyball court and several concrete pads for yard games such as 4 square and hopscotch.
Locust Elementary PTA co-presidents Ashley King and Courtney Lisk worked in partnership with SCS director of maintenance Keith Benton and principal Dr. Devron Furr to complete the first phase of updates.
Locust Elementary PTA allocates a large portion of its yearly Boosterthon Fun Run profits to playground updates and other facility needs at Locust Elementary.
“Boosterthon is our largest fundraiser of the year,” King said. “We have over 20 local businesses who support Locust Elementary through sign and T-shirt sponsorships. 65% of our students were able to raise donations to Boosterthon last year and all students participate in our Fun Run and receive a T-shirt.
“We are excited to complete the first round of updates, but we have more work to do. When this project began, most of our playground equipment was over 25 years old and our upper grades only had an open grassy area to play. With these updates, students in each grade level will have new playground equipment.
“We are thankful for the businesses and families who supports the needs of our school. The number of students at Locust continues to increase each year. We are busting at the seams inside the building and on the playground. We hope our contributions and updates provide students with more opportunities for daily physical play.”
