At approximately 10 a.m. Wednesday, the Albemarle Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at an apartment building in the 1900 block of Woodhaven Drive.
Upon arrival, units observed smoke coming from the eaves and roof vents of the building. Firefighters quickly contained the fire to a single room and brought it under control.
Several families residing in the apartment building safely evacuated without injuries. The American Red Cross was contacted to provide temporary housing, food and clothing for the family in the affected unit.
The Albemarle Fire Department requested mutual aid from off-duty Albemarle firefighters, as well as Center Rural VFD, Badin VFD, Eastside, Oakboro VFD, Bethany VFD, New London VFD and Southside VFD.
The Albemarle Fire Department fire marshal is investigating the incident, which is standard protocol. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
