The Stanly County Concert Band is excited to present its Annual Christmas Concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at Central United Methodist Church.
The concert features encore performances of three favorites from the fall concert and a collection of Christmas music.
There is no cost for admission, but the band asks that you bring a food item to donate to the Stanly Community Christian Ministry.
The band is performing several pieces from the Concert Band repertoire. The following are among pieces included in the concert:
• “All the Earth and Air,” “Incandescent Sky” and “Land of the Healing Waters” are encore pieces form the fall concert
• “Greensleeves,” arranged by Alfred Reed, is a traditional melody which is probably the second oldest piece of secular music in Western culture, its origin having been traced back to about 1360. This arrangement is a symphonic development of this 600-year-old classic melody adapted for the full resources of the modern concert band.
• “Grown-up Christmas List” is a contemporary Christmas song originally recorded by David Foster and Natalie Cole. It has also been recorded by Natalie Grant, Kelly Clarkson and many others.
Featured vocalist with the band is Ellie Mullins, a vocal music major at Pfeiffer University.
• “Carol of the Bells,” a classic Christmas carol, is given a symphonic treatment that brings out the rich Ukrainian flavor of this popular song.
• “With Good Will and Glad Tidings” is a medley of several popular Christmas songs.
• From a joyous “Ding Dong! Merrily on High” to a haunting “Silent Night,” from a carefree “Jingle Bells” to a march-style “Wassail Song” and concluding with a swingin “We Wish You a Merry Christmas,” this medley will make spirits bright all season long.
