A cherished holiday tradition in Albemarle is set to continue this year with a new date and time.
The Holiday Tour of Homes, a fundraiser hosted by Albemarle Downtown Development Corporation (ADDC), will take place earlier than in previous years — 4-8 p.m. Nov. 23.
The new tour date was selected in response to feedback from past homeowners and guests.
Many have noted that visitors appreciate the atmosphere of a twilight or evening tour, where light displays shine more brightly. Additionally, this earlier date resonates with this year’s homeowners, who are eager to prepare their homes sooner, allowing them to fully enjoy the holiday season. This year’s tour features eight sites.
As the holiday season draws near, several standout locations in Albemarle are opening their doors, inviting visitors to explore the creativity and care that define their spaces. From festive homes to thriving local businesses, these places capture the spirit of innovation and community pride.
Site 1: A Holiday Wonderland with Darrell “Smiley” and Rose Smith
Step inside the home of Darrell and Rose Smith, at 838 Brevard Dr., Albemarle, and you’re transported into a holiday paradise unlike any other. For 41 years, the Smiths have lovingly crafted a home that embodies the joy of the season, year-round.
Each room is a themed masterpiece. The dining room glimmers with burgundy, emerald green and gold accents, while 15 nativity scenes grace the china cabinet. The front bedroom is a whimsical snowman haven, and the master bedroom soothes with serene blue and white tones.
A sunroom, added eight years ago, offers an eclectic touch, while the hall bath stuns with bold black and gold decor.
But the real showstopper? Fourteen fully decorated Christmas trees scattered throughout the home. Outside, a real Amish sleigh sits proudly on the porch, flanked by two 6-foot trees, while the gazebo at the driveway offers a charming welcome.
“Every corner of our home tells a story,” Rose shares. “It’s about bringing joy to anyone who visits.”

Site 2 on the Holiday Tour of Homes is Hemco.

Site 2: Hemco – A Renovation That Reflects Excellence
Hemco, a leader in Stanly County’s construction and contracting industry, exemplifies how thoughtful renovations can breathe new life into a space.
Founded in 2007 by Donnie Hamilton and Kyle Marks, Hemco has grown from a mechanical contracting business into a full-service company offering mechanical, electrical, plumbing and cabinetry services.
In 2023, Hemco moved into a landmark building previously known as Doug’s Maytag at 1712 U.S. Highway 52 N., Albemarle. Extensive renovations transformed the 1977 structure into a modern, professional hub. The exterior now features fresh paint, updated trim and a sleek standing seam metal roof. Inside, the old drop ceiling was removed to reveal airy, open spaces, and a striking glass-walled conference room replaced the former cash register area.
One of the renovation’s highlights was uncovering and restoring the building’s original terrazzo flooring, hidden beneath decades-old carpeting. Today, the showroom dazzles with cabinetry displays, a welcoming reception area, and a festive “White Christmas” theme that captures the season’s magic.
“Our new space allows us to showcase our work and provide a warm, professional experience for our clients,” says Hamilton.

Site 3 is Fifth and College Tile & Design Co.

Site 3: Fifth and College Tile & Design Co. – From Garage to Elegance
Originally built in 1957 as a mechanic garage, the building that now houses Fifth and College Tile & Design Co. has undergone a stunning transformation. What was once a utilitarian space is now a boutique showroom that blends functionality with elegance.
Gone are the garage doors and basement oil change pits. In their place are sleek stationary storefront windows, a new rubber roof, and modern trusses. The interior boasts a thoughtfully curated selection of tile, stone, slabs, and lighting, complemented by a bathroom and kitchenette for client convenience.
Fifth and College, at 1712A U.S. Highway 52 N., Albemarle, is more than just a showroom; it’s a space designed to inspire. Partnering with Elle Luna Interiors, the studio offers comprehensive design services for large-scale renovations, reflecting its mission to “make life more beautiful.”
