Stanly County Crime Stoppers has been active on and off since 1980, according to Mike Doby, secretary of the organization’s board of directors.
It was originally directed by Albemarle Police Department Chief Don Frey, Doby said. It was reorganized in 1998 by Highway Patrol First Sgt. Earl Haynes. It was reorganized again in 2022 and is now active after receiving a new 501c3 tax exempt status.
“We have contacted all law enforcement agencies in Stanly, that the organization has been reorganized and available to assist their offices concerning resolving crimes,” Doby said. “Our purpose is to assist in the investigation of crimes by offering cash reward to an informant upon the arrest and conviction of a serious felony crime.
“Over the years, Crime Stoppers have assisted in solving crimes in Stanly County in the areas of obduction, kidnapping, sexual assault and other felonies,” Doby added. “There are other cases that are pending, including murder.”
The organization meets every other month and is under the direction of the Stanly County Sheriff’s Office.
“They help every law enforcement agency in the county,” Sheriff Jeff Crisco stressed. “They raise funds and agencies can use those funds to pay individuals who provide information that lead to the arrest of individuals.”
Doby mentioned how the organization’s intent “is to help make Stanly County a safer place to live and raise a family.”
