Albemarle police have arrested two male juveniles and are searching for a third male subject following a brief pursuit involving a stolen vehicle.
Around 2:38 a.m. Sunday, an APD officer’s patrol vehicle was nearly struck by a white Mercedes that ran a stop sign at Arey Avenue and East Main Street, police said.
Two APD officers pursued the vehicle for a short distance before three males slowed and jumped from the vehicle on South Morrow Street near Rush Street.
One juvenile was apprehended at the scene on South Morrow Street. A second juvenile was apprehended after Stanly County Sheriff’s Office assisted with a Police K-9 search. Each juvenile was in possession of a handgun and resisted arrest.
A third suspect was not apprehended and APD detectives are actively investigating.
The two juveniles who were apprehended are both from Albemarle. Investigation determined the white Mercedes had been stolen at approximately 2:32 a.m. The keys for the vehicle were left inside the car with the doors unlocked.
Albemarle Interim Police Chief Penny Dunn commended the actions of the officers during this incident.
“This was a dangerous encounter with armed individuals. The Albemarle Police Department has well-trained officers who exercised good judgement, quick action and courage when facing a difficult situation,” Dunn said.
Both juveniles face felony charges and were detained by the Juvenile Justice Department. The identities of the juveniles are not being released due to North Carolina law.
The stolen vehicle was returned to its owner. The investigation is ongoing as the same suspects are believed to be involved in three recent larceny of vehicle incidents in Albemarle.
