It’s 1985 and disco is not the only thing that is dead because murder is in the air once again for the West Stanly Players.
This year the WSP are returning to the Oakboro District Park Community Building with another interactive murder-mystery dinner theatre show. The new production transforms the quiet community building into “Club 85,” the hottest nightclub in town, and transports the audience back to the 80s for “A Killer Night at Club 85.”
“We are very excited to present another murder-mystery dinner this year,” says WSP director Wes Tucker. “The show offers a great opportunity for the audience to come have fun, enjoy a great meal, a hilarious evening of entertainment and to help solve a mystery.”
The Players presented their first interactive murder-mystery in 2004 and they have become one of the most popular and most requested types of plays the group produces.
The format allows audience members to not only enjoy the show, but to actually participate throughout the performance. Many audience members are considered suspects while others are given opportunities to interrogate the actors. At the end of the night, some lucky audience member who follows the clues and figures out “whodunit” wins a prize.
The evening features two mysteries. First, while audience members are enjoying their salad they are treated to “Murder Me Always,” the appetizer round. Many first-time performers are featured in this short, but hilarious mystery about a group of actors being stalked by the murder mystery killer. Then, while the entree is being served, the audience is taken back to 1985 for the main course featuring many veteran actors, “A Killer Night at Club 85.”
It is a twisted tale about two nightclub owners, Lane and Wanda, who are in a little over their heads when they go into business with a mysterious Russian, a money obsessed seductress, a valley girl with anger issues and a chef with an identity crisis.
“Our hope is to take you away from the quite streets of Oakboro or Albemarle and make each audience feel like they are patrons of a club in 1985,” says Tucker. “It is an immersive experience from the time you walk in the door until the final body falls.”
In addition to the show, the evening also features a three-course catered meal. The meal includes salad, an entrée, dessert and a beverage, all served by the WSP waitstaff.
Dinner theatre shows are on Nov. 22 and 23. Tickets are $25 per person and include dinner and the show.
There will be a special preview show on Nov. 21. Tickets for the preview show are $10, with no dinner served.
The doors open each night at 6:15 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m. All shows will be at the Oakboro District Park Community Building.
Tickets must be purchased in advance and seating is limited. To reserve a table, call April Tucker at 704-791-3200.
