After winning the Republican primary in May versus Stanly County Commissioner Brandon King, Cody Huneycutt, a Stanly farmer and former assistant to N.C. House of Representatives member Wayne Sasser and the N.C. Senate’s Carl Ford, took on Stanly County Democratic Party chairman Daniel Quick in Tuesday’s general election.

Huneycutt won the seat, garnering 36,209 votes from Stanly and Montgomery counties (75.14%) while Quick finished with 11,980 votes (24.86%). Huneycutt carried Stanly by a count of 27,496 to 8,059, and Montgomery by a count of 8,713 to 3,921.

At a victory celebration Tuesday night, Huneycutt thanked the voters of both counties “for the faith they’ve placed in me. I look forward to getting to work for them one day one. I don’t take it for granted, and I understand I have more than 90,000 bosses, so it’s something I look forward to, following the will of the people and listening to them as they call me with constituent issues.”

He also said he wanted to “thank my Lord and savior, Jesus Christ, and my family, who have been with me since Day 1.”

Huneycutt said one issue he plans to work on immediately is expanding access to rural health care.

“Our sick and elderly shouldn’t have to be driving to Pinehurst and Charlotte to able to receive health care. That’s an issue we need to start tackling sooner rather than later.”

Calls made to Quick were not returned as of the publication of this article.
