An inmate at Albemarle Correctional Institution died Wednesday.
Curtis Levi Moore, 38, who had just began a sentence in July for trafficking drugs, was pronounced dead at 3:32 a.m. at a local health care facility, according to Brad Deen, communications officer with the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction.
“State confidentiality laws regarding offender records and federal HIPAA restrictions on protected health information limit what the N.C. Department of Adult Correction can say about his death,” Deen said. “Local law enforcement and the N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating, which is required by state law for the death of anyone in custody. OCME will determine a cause of death, and their eventual report, including any relevant toxicological results, will be a public record.”
Deen said the Department of Adult Corrections is also doing an investigation into what happened. He said around 8 p.m. Oct. 19, Moore was taken to a local health facility for treatment. He returned to ACI around 2 a.m. Oct. 20.
At about 4 p.m. Oct. 20, EMS was called for an unrelated medical issue, Deen said.
“He was again transported to a local health care facility and admitted. He was pronounced dead at 3:32 a.m. Wednesday,” Deen said.
Moore was convicted of drug trafficking in Columbus County in July. His projected release date was in 2032.
Moore had previously been convicted in Bladen and Columbus counties for attempted first degree murder, weapons possession, receiving stolen goods, possession of drug paraphernalia and other charges.
