On Oct. 17, the Albemarle Rotary Club presented a check for $12,150 to The CART Fund.
CART stands for Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust. This fund has worked for the past 29 years to find a cure and treatments for Alzheimer’s and other dementia related diseases by awarding grants to researchers following an application and review process.
Since its founding, The CART Fund has awarded more than $13.1 million in grant funds. All funds donated to The CART Fund are used for grants.
Tiffany Ervin, director of The CART Fund made a presentation about the ongoing research funded by The CART Fund and was glad to accept the check. This donation makes the Albemarle Rotary Club one of the top Rotary Clubs making a gift to this fund so far this year.
The check presented from the Albemarle Rotary Club to The CART Fund are the proceeds from this June’s Race to Remember. The 3rd Annual Race to Remember was a huge success, largely due to the work of Rotary member Louisa Jane Hartsell and the community, sponsors and more than 100 runners and walkers who hope to see an end to Alzheimer’s.
Next year’s race is set for June 7, 2025.
The CART Fund was begun by Rotarian Roger Ackerman in 1995 in Sumter, South Carolina.
After his mother had passed from Alzheimer’s, Ackerman had the idea of collecting coins from members attending the Sumter Rotary Club meeting. The idea caught on and many Rotary Clubs throughout North America have blue buckets on the table at each meeting to collect for The CART Fund.
Rotary members are all about service, with the club’s motto “Service above Self.”
The Albemarle Rotary Club meets each Thursday at noon – normally at Atrium Health Stanly’s Magnolia Room.
“If you have a heart for service, you could be a great Rotary member. Visitors are always welcome,” Albemarle Rotary President Jay Almond says.
