When Albemarle failed to score from the Mount Pleasant 10-yard-line in the second quarter down 17-0, its prospects to get a conference victory looked slim on Friday night.
Mount went on to stay perfect in the Yadkin Valley with a 30-8 win. The Tigers came into the game ranked No. 19 in 2A. Mount extended its win streak to four and only 3A Northwest Cabarrus has been able to stop them this season.
Mount (7-1, 3-0) was led by the legs of Jacob Reid, who punished the Bulldog defense for 183 yards.
Albemarle (2-6, 0-3) didn’t allow a rushing play of more than 15 yards. The visitors’ were led on offense by the arm of Dre Davis who was 12 of 22 for 116 yards. Davis’ main target was fellow senior Zyion Geiger. Davis has seven total touchdown passes.
Geiger pulled in eight passes including a 29-yard touchdown toss in the fourth quarter with Kaine McLendon punching in the two-point PAT to make it 24-8.
McLendon was a standout on defense, recording his ninth sack of the year. He had 43 yards on the ground.
Vincient Gregory got his number called for the first time last week in the second half and totaled 33 yards. Both McLendon and Gregory have five total touchdowns.
Albemarle mishandled a kickoff in the second quarter which led to a second Tiger touchdown.
Albemarle travels to Monroe this week to take on Union Academy (5-3) who gave Lake Norman Charter (6-1) its first loss in a 13-10 upset.
North Stanly 29, South Stanly 12
North Stanly improved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Yadkin Valley Conference with a third straight win at home.
Comet Charlie Shaver threw for 121 yards and two touchdowns while completing 78.6% of his passes while Jaylon Mckoy picked up 57 receiving yards.
Sosa Murphy had three sacks. Nathan Helms was another major factor on defense, making three total tackles and defending four passes.
South Stanly drops to 4-3, 1-2 in the YVC.
South takes on Lake Norman Charter, who averages over 26 points per game, in Week 9. North hosts Mount Pleasant.
Parkwood 46, West Stanly 13
West Stanly fell to 1-7, 2-1 with a 46-13 thumping in Union County to Parkwood.
