The Stanly Arts Guild is once again using Breast Cancer Awareness Month to raise funds for the Stanly Health Foundation.
For the last two years, the Guild raised money during October with its Cups for the Cure campaign, where artists decorated bras. They would then be donated for the public to bid on, with proceeds going to Stanly Health Foundation to support its free mammogram program.
“Many of you may be like me, unaware of the free mammogram program,” Guild President Wendy Hillhouse writes in the Guild’s September newsletter. “Until I started searching for ways to support breast cancer awareness locally, I had no idea that Stanly Health Foundation provides free mammograms to those with no access to mammograms or ways to afford a mammogram. What a wonderful and life-changing service for those that need it. I can’t think of a better way to help support breast cancer awareness than to possibly help save a life.”
Instead of bras, this year artists will decorate hot pink bump caps (hard hats).
“Someone said men may not be comfortable decorating bras so now they have no excuse to not participate — we’re doing caps, not cups,” Hillhouse wrote.
For a $5 donation, individuals can pick up a cap at the Stanly Arts Guild, 330-C N. Second St., Albemarle, decorate it for public display and bring it back for the Guild’s silent auction during October.
Visitors can check out the auction items during October, with proceeds then going to Stanly Health Foundation.
