PEEKING INTO THE PAST: First Presbyterian Church

Quite often when searching for a picture of a particular business or building, it can be very difficult to find one. Unless a family descendant can be found, pictures of particular homes can be the hardest to find. Sometimes we are fortunate and have a postcard that might show a particular area. Today’s pictures are two postcards, circa 1915-1919, of North First Street in Albemarle. The top picture shows the original First Presbyterian Church building that was located diagonally across the intersection from the current building. The house immediately to the left of the church was at one time the home of A.L. Patterson, supervisor of Lillian Mills. The house on the far left was at one time the home of long-time Albemarle mayor M.J. Harris. The bottom photo is of the same part of North First Street but was taken about where the Uwharrie Capital offices are located today and is looking north. The owner of the first home is unknown. The Harris and Patterson homes, along with the church, can be seen in the distance. {Lewis Bramlett – Stanly County Historical Society}
