Albemarle graduate makes it to finals in Olympics trials

Stanly County could have a connection at the Summer Olympics in Paris.
Albemarle High School graduate and University of Texas freshman Akala Garrett finished third in the third heat of the semifinals of the Women’s 400-Meter Hurdles Saturday in Eugene, Oregon. Garrett qualified on time to advance to the finals on Sunday.
Garrett finished her heat in a time of 55.34, behind Anna Cockrell’s heat winning performance of 52.95. Cockrell’s time was the second fastest overall, behind Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s 52.48.
The finals are scheduled for 8:29 p.m. Sunday. They can be viewed on NBC and Peacock.
