4 inductees announced for Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame

The Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame will honor its 2024 class of inductees on June 3 at Pfeiffer University’s Merner Gym.
These inductees are:
• The late Jack Gaster, who coached the Albemarle High School football team to a record of 121 wins and 25 losses between 1993 and 2003, and captured state 1-AA titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003;
• Bill Mauldin, an Albemarle High School and Appalachian State graduate, who coached Watauga High School to the 1978 NCHSAA 3-A championship and Catawba College to a South Atlantic Conference title in 1988;
• Darrell Mauldin, a graduate of North Stanly High School and Campbell University, who was a two-time all-conference basketball player at NSHS, North Piedmont Conference Tournament MVP and East-West All-Star Game selection in 1976. He also played basketball at Campbell and led the nation in free throw percentage in 1978-79; and
• Frances Watson, a record-setting basketball player at Richfield High School and Pfeiffer, and long-time teacher and volleyball, basketball and softball coach at East Rowan High School.
Keynote speaker for the 2024 induction ceremony will be Stanly County Sports Hall of Fame member Rod Broadway.
Broadway is retired following a successful football coaching career at North Carolina Central, Grambling State and North Carolina A & T.
He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned All-ACC and All-American honors.
The 2024 ceremony will take place at 6 p.m. June 3.
Tickets will go on sale in late April at locations throughout Stanly County.
