On Feb. 17, Boy Scout Troop 202 teamed up with the Barbee-Turner V.F.W. Post 6365 to conduct a flag retirement ceremony. This event was at the VFW post’s grounds and saw Scouts from Troop 202 joining veterans to honor the flag.
As part of the ceremony, tattered and worn flags, which had flown over homes and businesses, were retired from service.
Each flag was inspected before being folded and retired.
“This ceremony underscores the values of service, respect and patriotism that both Scouting, and the VFW stand for,” Scoutmaster Matt Sheffield said. “It is a privilege for our Scouts to participate in such a meaningful event alongside our appreciated veterans.”
VFW Cmdr. Bobbi Sheets said, “Sharing what it takes to maintain the freedom of the flag was just as important as reverently retiring the flags.”
Boy Scout Troop 202 meets at 7 p.m. each Tuesday at Locust Presbyterian Church.
VFW Post 6365 meets at 7 p.m. on the third Tuesday of each month at 1011 Meadow Creek Church Road in Locust.
