(Above, foreground) A thunderstorm caused a huge tree to crush the old What-A-Burger awning next to Jay’s Downtowner in east Albemarle Saturday night. (Background) Workers across the street inspect and clean up roof damage Sunday morning of a building which housed the Miracle Center Ministry and Greene’s Express Tax Service. The National Weather Service’s records show heavy rains in Albemarle around 8 p.m. Saturday, with wind gusts up to 9 mph. Looking ahead, the NWS says damaging winds and large are possible through Saturday, and a “brief tornado can’t be ruled out.” The heat index for Monday is expected to reach 101 to 107 degrees.
