An 80-year-old woman coming home from the grocery store died Friday night just moments from home.

N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper R.K. London said Kay Huneycutt of Oakboro turned a 2003 Honda Accord left from N.C. Highway 24-27 onto Liberty Hill Church Road when she collided with a 2023 Kia.

Highway Patrol received a call about the crash shortly after 7 p.m.

London said he was not sure if Huneycutt had a problem with the sight distance, as it was sunny cresting over the hill.

“She wasn’t far from her residence,” he said.

“We’re not sure if speed was a factor,” he added. “That part is still under investigation.”

The 23-year-old driver of the Kia, whom he did not have the name of when reached for comment, was headed to Albemarle. She was treated and released from Atrium Health Stanly Friday night, he said.

“There have been several serious crashes at that intersection as a result of limited sight distance from the eastbound lanes,” London said. “It’s a dangerous intersection when turning left from 24 or turning left from Liberty Hill.”

“I know of three where there were fairly serious injuries. I don’t how many fatalities have occurred at that intersection.”

Huneycutt “was a dedicated worker and put her heart into whatever she was doing,” according to her obituary.

She is survived by a son, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Her funeral will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel.
