A 5K walk and fun run, scheduled for Sunday in Locust, is set in honor of City of Locust employee and breast cancer survivor Mandy Thomas, with proceeds benefiting the Cindy’s Hope Chest organization.
The mission of Cindy’s Hope Chest is to provide emotional and financial support to women battling breast cancer by providing them with education, support and encouragement.
Thomas, a wife and mother of three children, was diagnosed with cancer in 2011.
She credits Cindy’s Hope Chest with assisting her in her journey with the disease.
“At the time I was diagnosed, my children ranged in age from 11 to 7,” she said. “I’m a 10-year survivor now, but Cindy’s Hope Chest provided tremendous support while I was undergoing treatments.”
The organization provides assistance in a number of ways, added Thomas.
“Cindy’s Hope Chest provides more than just financial support,” she said. “For example, they will assist with transportation to treatments and doctor appointments, house cleaning, and other services. They also sponsor a support group of survivors, who help new patients deal with the challenges of cancer.”
The event will take place at Locust City Hall on Sunday. Registration will begin at 1:30 p.m., with the walk and fun run beginning at 2.
Individuals and teams may participate, and a gift certificate to a local restaurant will be awarded to those who wear the best “Sock it to Cancer” socks and outfits.
Entry fee for participants is a donation to Cindy’s Hope Chest.
