Sgt. Henry Fonzo Smith was from Albemarle and was the first soldier from here that was Killed In Action on Nov. 17, 1965.
He served with Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (AMBL), USARV.
He was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge (CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, and the National Defense Medal.
