Art served in the US Navy from 1944-1947 aboard the USS Boxer, USS Kearsarge and the USS Shangri-La. His squadron of SB2C’s Helldrivers saw action in the Philippine Islands chain serving in the dive bomber role against enemy shipping lanes.

His deployment took him to Subic Bay in Australia and finally to Japan after the surrender.
