The athletic teams of West Stanly and Eastern Randolph are not unfamiliar with each other in some sports, such as softball, when the Colts won the 2A state title in 2019 over the Wildcats.

However, the two schools had never met on the gridiron heading into Friday’s game in Ramseur.

West’s offense went a second straight game without a touchdown, falling on the road 33-3.

After a scoreless first quarter, Carson Morton had a pass intercepted and returned inside the Colts 20-yard line. Several plays later, fullback Davonte Brooks scored from two yards out to put Eastern Randolph (4-0) on the board 6-0 with 6:43 left in the first half.

West Stanly (2-2) fumbled on its next offensive play and the Wildcats cashed it in. A long pass set up a Brooks six-yard TD run. The two-point conversion put the hosts up 14-0.

The Colts’ only points of the game came in the second quarter. A 43-yard Caden Edwards field goal with 3:42 remaining made the score 14-3, where it stayed until the fourth quarter.

Eastern Randolph scored three touchdowns in the final 5:39 of the game en route to the win.

West Stanly is off Friday and will not play until Oct. 8 when West opens Rocky River Conference play on the road at Parkwood (2-1).
