A person from Gold Hill was killed in a traffic incident Friday afternoon just outside of the Albemarle city limits.

According to N.C. Highway State Patrol Sgt. Eric Phillips, Daniel Walter of Albemarle attempted to make a right turn off Canton Road onto N.C. Highway 24-27 going westbound at approximately 3:37 p.m.

Walter’s car collided with a Ford F250 pickup driven by James Vickery of Gold Hill. Vickery’s truck overturned and he was ejected from the vehicle, dying instantly.

Phillips said Vickery was not wearing a seat belt.

Neither truck was carrying any passengers, Phillips said. The investigation is continuing to determine if speed was a factor in the incident.

Walter was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to yield the right of way.
