The woman who struck a stopped logging truck Wednesday afternoon has been charged with a DWI, according to the state highway patrol.

In addition to the DWI, the state highway patrol said the woman is facing the following: One charge of felony child abuse, two misdemeanor child abuse charges, failure to reduce speed and driving on a suspended driver’s license.

The woman and one of her children were airlifted to a Charlotte hospital, First Sgt. J.M. Jackson of the State Highway Patrol said. There were three children in the car at the time of the accident.

According to Jackson, the wreck happened early Wednesday afternoon on U.S. Highway 52 between Bowers and Cottonville roads, near Norwood.

The woman, who was from Norwood, was driving a 2004 Hyundai when she failed to reduce her speed and collided with the truck which had stopped due to a crew trimming trees off the power lines. Jackson said logs smashed through the vehicle’s windshield when the car hit the back of the truck.

The woman and one of her children, a 9-year-old, suffered serious injuries and were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte while the other two children were taken to Atrium Health Stanly but will be okay.

The identities of the people involved have not been released yet. The investigation is ongoing.
