A 5.1 magnitude earthquake happened near Sparta along the North Carolina-Virginia border shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday

A small earthquake in Sparta was reported earlier in the morning.

Residents of Stanly County, as well as ones at points as far as the North Carolina coast and into South Carolina, reported houses shaking.
