Badin residents will have the chance to speak up about the old Alcoa Badin Works property in Badin during a meeting Tuesday evening.

The North Carolina Hazardous Waste Section will hold the meeting to address the remediation efforts at the property.

During the Badin town council’s meeting Nov. 12, Nick Jimenez, a representative of the Southern Environmental Law Center, urged the council to consider attending the meeting.

Jimenez said Alcoa, operating as Badin Business Park, is responsible for cleaning up the site, adding that the company has the financial means to accomplish the task.

“The meeting will be an opportunity for Badin citizens to hear information (on) ongoing activities at the site and ask questions or express any concerns regarding RCRA remediation activities at the former Alcoa Badin Works facility,” a public notice printed in The Stanly News & Press read. “It will also be an opportunity for citizens to provide input to the Hazardous Waste Section concerning future remedial action at the facility.”

The former Alcoa Badin Works plant site, Alcoa-Badin Landfill, old brick landfill and former ball field will all be up for discussion.

The notice promises to provide “… presentations, a question-and-answer period, and a listening session.”

Jimenez warned Badin council that now is the time for residents to speak up if they have concerns.

Questions or comments from members of the public can be sent to Rob McDaniel at robert.mcdaniel@ncdenr.gov. They can also be mailed to: Rob McDaniel N.C. Division of Waste Management Hazardous Waste Section MSC 1646 Raleigh, NC 27699-1646
