Friday’s filing period for municipal elections began with a modest start.
Of Stanly County’s nine nonpartisan municipal boards and 28 impending vacancies, only five candidates filed to run for office. Four of the five candidates are incumbents on their respective councils.
There were no filings reported Monday.
Badin led the way on the first day for filing with two incumbents seeking re-election. Anne Kelley Harwood and Larry Milano filed Friday.
Harwood is seeking to represent the east district.
Milano filed for the at-large seat.
Currently Harwood serves as mayor in Badin, a post chosen among council members every two years.
In Locust, Roger Hypes is seeking another term as at-large councilman.
Incumbent Michael (Frizbee) Herron filed as an at-large candidate for the village council in Misenheimer.
Lisa Cratty represents the open day filings’ only non-incumbent, although she has run for mayor of Oakboro before. She filed as a candidate for mayor.
The filing period continues through noon July 20.
