Stanly County Commissioners elected Gene McIntyre to serve as commission chairman for the next year.
Josh Morton was chosen as the vice-chairman.
Commissioners also witnessed the oath taking of re-elected Commissioner Tony Dennis and newly-elected Commissioner Peter Asciutto.
Asciutto got off to a fast start on the board attempting to bring up a settlement agreement he said he had gotten from representatives from ALCOA.
He had campaigned on the subject of having more transparency in the ALCOA matter.
Asciutto had requested he be allowed access to the minutes of all the previous closed door sessions.
County Manager Andy Lucas said the commission would have to vote to approve that access during the closed session because Asciutto was not a board member at the time of those discussions.
During that session, the commission did vote to approve Asciutto’s access to the minutes.
The commission had scheduled a closed session with the ALCOA issue on the agenda; however, during the commission’s time for general comments, Asciutto brought up the subject in an attempt to get the matter discussed.
“I’d like to clarify some stuff just to see if we can move forward,” Asciutto said.
“I met with the ALCOA folks this afternoon, and I have a proposal here that expires at midnight tonight and hopefully we’ll have some time for discussion,” Asciutto said.
None of the commissioners made any comments about Asciutto’s remarks.
After the board members emerged from a long closed session, Asciutto said he was denied the chance to discuss the proposal.
“I was told it wasn’t approved to go back there and talk about it,” Asciutto said.
When directly asked whether the commissioner would not let him bring up the ALCOA proposal to discuss, Asciutto replied, “Correct.”
He said it was his impression it was on the agenda to discuss in the closed session.
Asciutto said McIntyre was the one who said it could not be discussed and the other commissioners “didn’t say much of anything.”

State Highway Patrol Employees and Civilians Receive Departmental Awards
RALEIGH - Colonel Bill Grey, commander of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and Kieran Shanahan, secretary of the Department of Public Safety presented several employees and civilians with awards from the department in a ceremony held today at the SBI Auditorium located in Raleigh.
