The Finance Committee of the Board of Education met on Tuesday evening before the school board’s monthly meeting.
The first item discussed was the close out of the 2011-2012 school year.
As it stands, there are still issues with the approved numbers matching up with the actual numbers, preventing the close out of the fiscal year.
“It has been suggested that we consider a third party consultant for the 2011-12 year audit,” said School Superintendent Dr. Terry Griffin. “Since that time, I have been utilizing a school efficiency consultant to assist me with the close out of 2011- 12 school year.”
“I am hopeful that we will have the school year closed out by Friday, October 5. And when that is done, I should be able to reconcile our bank statements with our general ledger,” Griffin said.
“Once that is done, the auditors will be able to come in and complete our 2011-12 audit.”
The primary reason the committee met was to discuss changes in the 2012-13 coach’s supplement scale.
As it stood from the approved supplement scale that was passed in August, the total amount of coach’s supplements was to be reduced by approximately $64,000.
To meet this reduction, the August plan called for elimination of one pay-grade scale, combining it with another. This would have achieved the desired reductions, however, it also would mean that all of the coaches would not be taking an equal percentage cut.
That plan was scrapped.
“We just did not see an equitable solution,” said Dr. Griffin about the proposed reductions.
Instead, after crunching the numbers, the finance committee decided it would be better to keep the existing pay grades, but have a 20.5 percent reduction across the spectrum. Now, all of the coaches will have the same percent reduction.
“This seems to be much more equitable than some people having cuts and some not,” said Chris Whitley, chairman of the finance committee.
The new replacement scale was adopted at the board meeting later on that night.
Board member Jeff Chance said at that meeting, “Essentially what this replacement does is it takes into consideration the years of longevity of the head coaches and some of the other coaches that was not previously accounted for in the resolution that was adopted previously.”
“This will be as equitable as possible across the board while these considerations still remain in place: longevity and years of service.”
