Teen faces no charges at this time, DA reports

Tuesday, October 18, 2011 — No charges have been filed at this time in the accident that resulted in the death of two local high school students, according to the Stanly County District Attorney’s office.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, Jordan Carpenter, 16, of Norwood was driving his 1997 Jeep north on Cottonville Road at approximately 8 p.m. Oct. 5 when he swerved to avoid hitting a deer. He then overcorrected, causing the jeep to flip.

Carpenter was wearing a seat belt at the time of his accident, but his two passengers Austin Burleson, 15, of Norwood and Hunter Mauldin, 16, of Mt. Gilead, were not, according to the highway patrol. They were ejected from the vehicle and died as a result of their injuries.

All three teens were students at South Stanly High School, where Mauldin was a member of the junior varsity football team.
