Tuesday afternoon, despite the dreary weather, many job-hungry citizens appeared for the annual Stanly Community College (SCC) Career Fair.
This is the second year SCC has opened it to the public.
“We’ve invited the community the last two years. We had a really good turnout last year,” said Delia Carriker, coordinator of student outreach and support.
“Dr. Brenda Kays, SCC president, felt strongly that it was a good public relations opportunity.”
Many businesses and organizations were in attendance at the fair, from Avon to law enforcement and everything in between.
Donnie Mann, Frankie Morton and Eric Cook were there representing NCDOC Division of Workforce Solutions, displaying information for veterans and job seekers in general.
Christi Almond from SCC had a booth on the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) courses offered at SCC.
“You have to have a BLET certificate to be a police officer,” Almond said.
She said that one could go anywhere in the state and find employment with law enforcement with a BLET, though she noted that one has to go to special training to work for N.C. Highway Patrol.
Full-time day and evening classes will be starting soon. One has to be 20 or older to be enrolled in BLET.
Mike Smith from Monroe Police Department was manning a booth.
“We’re always interested in folks interested in us,” Smith said.
He said that Monroe Police had applicant interest cards as a part of its hiring process. Applicants simply needed to fill one out to be contacted when Monroe is hiring.
James Lamb and Sandy Skidmore operated the booth for Avon.
Skidmore explained that they were looking for new representatives in the area for full-time or supplemental work.
“It’s a good opportunity to meet people and supplement your income,” Skidmore said.
Norma Thomas from Oakboro Tractor and Equipment said they had opened locations in Concord and Monroe. The head office is still in Oakboro, though.
Thomas said they sold tractors, lawn mowers and “all the boy toys you can think of.”
Kevin Hennelly of the N.C. Highway Patrol spoke about the many positions available through the agency.
If interested in motorcycles, they have a division for that, in addition to aerial piloting positions and working with canine units.
“It’s a great career and there’s always something going on,” Hennelly said.
“We’re always looking for new staff,” said Nikki Laster of Bayada.
She said they specialize in home health assistive care and private nursing, serving Stanly, Richmond and Montgomery counties.
Citizens traveled from all over to come to the career fair.
Carie Bumbarger, who graduated from SCC in December, came to the career fair all the way from Cabarrus County.
“I’ve seen a lot for health care, not much for business. But any time you can put your face out there it’s good, no matter what,” Bumbarger said.
There are a number of online resources available on SCC’s website.
“We do have a job portal that’s free to students and employers,” Carriker said.

We are Uniquely Made
Earlier this week the seniors at our school had one final hurdle to jump before graduation. They had to present their senior projects before panels of community members. Each room had four adults: the moderator and the three judges. You can be sure the students were quite nervous, but they usually do a great job. If they have practiced and prepared then they should experience success.
