Albemarle Police Depart-ment is conducting a death investigation after responding to an emergency medical call at the magistrate’s office Tuesday.
At 9:33 a.m., a medical call was received from the magistrate’s office. An APD officer responded along with Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel. After arriving, the officer found the magistrate and jail staff administering CPR on a female victim, Shatia Daneen Cantos. She was then transported to Stanly Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Cantos, 28, was at the magistrate’s office to obtain warrants for an incident that occurred earlier that morning. At 9:06 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to Amhurst Street for an assault and damage to property call. On arrival, Cantos reported that a person known to her had assaulted her and damaged her vehicle, officials said. The other party was not at the residence when officers arrived, though.
The officer spoke with Cantos, conducted an initial review of what occurred and ascertained that the she did not want medical attention.
Cantos then told the officer would go to the magistrate’s office to obtain warrants for the individual that assaulted her and damaged her property.
Upon arriving at the office, though, she collapsed, which was when the call was made to Stanly County EMS.
