The Stanly County Board of Education met on Tuesday night tackling a full agenda in their last meeting before the election in November.
The first order of business was to recognize teachers who are retiring this year.
Fifty-seven staff members retired from the Stanly County School system this year.
“I want to thank you for all the service you’ve given to our schools. This is just a small token of our great appreciation for all that you’ve done and we wish you all the best in your new adventures,” said Vicki Calvert, Director of Human Resources for Stanly County schools.
On another note, Tommy Harkey, North Stanly High School athletic director and constructions teacher, appeared before the school board and requested that the gym at NSHS be named after L.R. Chandler, a former athletic director at NSHS. Currently, the football stadium is named after him. The Board promised to consider Harkey’s request.
However, the main topic of the night was the redistricting study conducted on Stanly County Schools.
The current school board initiated a study on the school districts of Stanly County back in August, and the report is now ready. With elections coming up in November, the problem is the current school board will not have a chance to utilize this study.
The fear is that the study will not be used, that it will sit on the shelf collecting dust like other similar reports have in the past.
“We have a responsibility to our taxpayers to show them how their money was spent. We have a responsibility to do something with this report,” said Board Chairperson Anita Owens-Scott.
“I fully acknowledge that the redistricting study does not provide a cookie cutter solution to our questions regarding redistricting,” said Superintendent Dr. Terry Griffin, “but it does provide feedback from an outside agency for proper analysis by the community and the board of education.
“The study confirms the mitigating factors that the current board and our future board will continue to struggle with developing a plan for Stanly County schools,” Griffin said.
These mitigating factors include a population that is spreading throughout the county as well as declining. State funding for schools is dependent on student population, therefore any changes in those areas force a change in funding, creating the need to redistrict.
Board members Chris Whitley and Tracey Wyrick both urged the future school board to consider using the study.
In other school board news, Dr. Sandra Carter, assistant superintendent and director of curriculum and instruction, requested that the board approve the school improvement plans that were presented last week. Her request was met with approval and a motion was passed.
The next regular Stanly County Board of Education meeting will be on November 6 at the Central Office Staff Development Room.
