WSMS will receive mobiles

Friday, February 9, 2012 — The Stanly County Board of Education meeting Tuesday shed light on the issue of mobile unit classrooms. Through plans of redistricting, though, West Stanly Middle School may not have a use for mobile units following this academic year.

As reported in the Jan. 19 issue of The Stanly News & Press, Board Member Grant Allen found mobile units for West Stanly Middle would be a waste. If redistricting is approved, the mobile units would be left unused.

At Tuesday’s meeting, Superintendent Dr. Samuel DePaul said adding six mobile units to West Stanly Middle would “accommodate current and future students.”

Plans for redistricting include turning West Stanly Middle into a seventh- and eight-grade facility. If the school is used for just two grades, mobile units would be unnecessary, as the classrooms could be built using money from the capital improvements fund.

Board Member Melvin Poole requested the board not move the units, as he felt they will not be needed the following academic year.

A motion to move mobile units carried, though, and six mobile units will be prepared to be moved to the middle school.

“For the moment, it is the best thing to do because we do not know what the redistricting study will yield,” Board Chair Anita Owens-Scott said.

“Right now, it is the best action so those sixth graders are not left lingering.”
