The Stanly County Board of Commissioners voted recently to issue a merit raise to Andy Lucas, county manager.
The Stanly County Board of Commissioners are responsible for evaluating the county manager position and setting the level of pay and benefits for the position.
“The board conducted an evaluation of Andy’s performance during the last month or two, which is something the board is required to do,” Lindsey Dunevant, chairman of the board, said.
“The board indicated through the evaluation that the merit increase was warranted.”
The decision to increase Lucas’ base pay was made during a closed session meeting on Jan. 23, and was announced following the meeting.
Prior to the raise, Lucas’ base salary was $96,500, which was established when he was hired in August 2008. The board voted on Jan. 9 to extend Lucas’ contract until August 2016. His new base salary will now be $100,000, which was an increase of $3,500.
Lucas explained that the funds for merit raises, not just for his but for all employees, are included in the 2011-2012 budget. The decision to include pay-for-performance raises was made based on the fact that no cost of living allowance was issued to employees, but inflation was increasing.
Employees with the county had not received pay-for-performance raises since December 2008, though Dunevant indicated several other employees will be receiving merit raises in the coming weeks.
Lucas added that he plans to propose the allotment of funds in the 2012-2013 budget for merit raises, which will be available for all employees.
