Downtown businesses are welcoming shoppers to get involved in a game of bingo that could yield big prizes for each winner.
For this year’s holiday Bingo contest, 16 downtown businesses have joined together with the Albemarle Downtown Business Association to create a shopping version of the old-time card game.
ADBA’s President Nancy Lipe said that the game is a fun way to get people involved in shopping downtown during the holiday shopping season.
“The idea was to get people a chance to win cash to spend downtown, and to have them go into the stores, not just on a rush thing for downtown Christmas, but over the course of the month of November,” Lipe said. The bingo cards can be found at any of the participating businesses, and only needs to be stamped by an employee to get credit for playing.
As cards are punched, the greater the odds that one can win. One fully stamped line is worth one entry, with each line added equaling another entry. If one visits all 16 stores, resulting in a blackout on the bingo card, then their name will be entered eight times for the prizes.
Entries must be submitted to the Falling Rivers Gallery by the end of the Albemarle Downtown Christmas event to be eligible for prizes.
The next morning, on Dec. 1, a drawing will be held totaling $350 in prizes. The four gift certificates are valued at $150, $100 and two $50 values.
The certificates are valid at any of the participating stores, all of which members of the ADBA.
“To have people come into a store to get their bingo card filled out, that’s just a part of membership,” she said of the store’s benefit in being involved in both ADBA and the game.
Cissie Cox, manager of Hi-Lites on W. Main Street fully supports the holiday Bingo game. Hi-Lites was involved in the holiday Bingo game last year and then saw a winner spend a substantial amount in their store.
“We were so grateful. Holiday Bingo is really fun for everyone involved, the people playing it and for businesses too. It’s a great way to bring people downtown,” she said.
“You’re going to visit at Downtown Christmas anyway, so get your card stamped cause there’s many ways to win.”
