Tuesday, February 5, 2013 —
The Stanly County Board of Education met for their regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night and had a plethora of items on the agenda for discussion.
The 2012 audit is finally complete. Copies of the audit are available at the school board, should anyone wish to see it. The audit is a public record.
The 2013-2014 school calendar has been approved. The school board decided to go with a 180-day calendar, as per feedback from the public. Additionaly, the school board has implemented an additional 15 minutes for elementary school days, high and middle schools already opperate on a six-hour workday.
In reagrds to a request made in October, the board voted to rename the North Stanly High School (NSHS) gym to the L.R. Chandler Gymnasium, in honor of former NSHS coach and current school board member Lonnie R. Chandler.

Stanly County Baseball / Softball Update
In local playoff games on Friday, South Stanly hosted Albemarle in a third-round 1A baseball playoff matchup, while West Stanly hosted Piedmont in the 2A softball third-round and Gray Stone traveled to Chatham Central for a 1A third-round softball game.

Pirate Excavation Education Launches QAR Shipwreck Expedition
BEAUFORT -- North Carolina students in the 4th through 8th grades can free their imaginations and ask questions about Blackbeard and the wreck of his flagship, Queen Anne's Revenge (QAR), during a live online stream from the Watercraft Center at the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort on Friday, May 31, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. They'll learn how researchers retrieve artifacts from the ocean floor or clean crusty cannon balls after nearly 300 years with project archaeologists and conservators.
