Stanly County students have been working for the past four months on their science fair projects.
Projects ranged from the classic “How a Volcano Erupts” to novel ideas such as “Really, Gluten Free?”
After going through individual school fairs, students were selected to compete in the countywide science fair.
The projects were on display in the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center from Jan. 22-23.
The projects were judged by Steve Teeter and Cecile Nash, two retired science teachers from Stanly County Schools. Judging criteria was based off the North Carolina Science Fair requirements.
Students with projects on display for the science fair were from the Elementary (grades 3-5) and Junior (grades 6-8) Divisions.
Students who won the county fair became eligible to compete in regionals. The Region 6A Science Fair will be on Feb. 9 in Salisbury.
Thirty students from Stanly County Schools qualified to compete in the regional competition.
Kaylyn Gise was among those.
Her project — “Which one of my pets has the Cleanest Mouth?” — utilized a petri dish and a microscope.
“I have a cat, a dog and a horse. I took a swab of the saliva in their mouths and I tested it. First, I waited a week and let them grow some in my petri dishes.
“It turned out that the horses had the most bacteria, cats had the least and that left dogs in the middle.
“I kind of just thought of it when the teacher was talking about one of her students,” Gise said.
She explained that she modeled her experiment after a similar one that was focused on people instead of animals.
“I like science, pets and animals,” she said of why she chose to do this particular experiment.
Gise elaborated, saying she had learned a lot from the experience with the experiment.
“I learned how to use a petri dish and learned how to swab my pets’ mouths.
“I learned more about how to do a science fair project. Last year I did one, I wasn’t really competing. This year I was trying to go higher and I did,” Gise said.
The event was presided over by Georgia Harvey and Jency Speight, both from the Stanly County Board of Education.
“This year the judges said that these projects are some of the best that they’ve ever seen and they’ve been judging for over 10 years. I believe they said ‘high quality,’ ” Harvey said.
All students who participated in the countywide science fair received a ribbon and a pin.

Safe Kids Stanly County offers safety tips for land, water
In honor of National Kids Safety Day, Safe Kids Stanly County had a Safe Kids Day Saturday morning in front of All 4 Fun Inflatables in Albemarle. The event was from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and featured an array of informational services provided by volunteers from different organizations from around the county who are a part of the Safe Kids Stanly County Coalition.

Earlier this week the seniors at our school had one final hurdle to jump before graduation. They had to present their senior projects before panels of community members. Each room had four adults: the moderator and the three judges. You can be sure the students were quite nervous, but they usually do a great job. If they have practiced and prepared then they should experience success.

2014 NASCAR Hall Of Fame Class Announced
