The Stanly County Board of Education recognized teachers who acquired National Board Certification in 2012 and 2013 during its meeting Tuesday.
“The process for National Board Certification is based on high, rigorous standards that evaluate teaching processes through performance-based assesments. Teachers for national board certification must have completed three full years of teaching in North Carolina public schools and hold a valid, clear and continuing North Carolina teaching license,” Superintendent Dr. Terry Griffin said.
The teachers who received certification are: Emily Shaw, Shelly Eudy, Angie Burleson, Jennifer Baucom, Lisa Upright, Amber Speight, April Simpson, Mark Rowles, Eva Hudson, Melody Dutton and Tracy Gaddy.
In other news, in October Tommy Harkey appeared before the Facilities Committee and requested that the North Stanly High School (NSHS) gymnasium be renamed the “L.R. Chandler Gymnasium” in honor of Lonnie Chandler, a former NSHS ladies basketball coach and current school board member.
Harkey appeared before the school board at Tuesday’s meeting and again voiced his request. Harkey, also a coach at NSHS, explained why he thought the gym should be renamed after Chandler.
“I’ll read the accolades Mr. Chandler has. During his tenure at North Stanly ... for 33 years, accumulating an outstanding record of 556 wins out of 785 games played. His team ... won 13 2A conference championship, five conference tournaments and three 2A state district championships. Coach Chandler was also a football coach for nine years.
“For his accomplishments, Coach Chandler was elected to the ... Stanly County Schools Hall of Fame and in 2005 he was inducted into the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame.
“Coach Chandler is probably in the top ten of winning coaches in the hundred years of high school athletics.”
Harkey also cited the football stadium and the baseball facility, claiming they were named after former, accomplished NSHS coaches. It only seemed fitting that the gym be dedicated, as well.
Once the motion came before the board, Chandler excused himself from the discussion and voting so as not to show any bias.
The motion carried and the NSHS gym is to be renamed the “L.R. Chandler Gymnasium.”
Chandler thanked Harkey for this honor.
“This honors me and a great number of young ladies that made this happen,” said Chandler upon receiving the distinction.
The dedication for the L. R. Chandler Gymnasium will be on Feb. 15 at NSHS prior to the girls’ varsity basketball game (about 6 p.m.). All former NSHS coaches and athletes are encouraged to attend the game.

The board appointed the board attorney, Mark Lowder, to contact real estate listings for the Old Central School property that is currently for sale. The intention is to get the property sold as soon as possible.
Griffin spoke about the new strategic plan, noting that invitations have been sent out to school-based and community-based nominees to participate in the sub-committee.
Teacher Teresa Crump spoke during open forum, urging the board to increase funding for digital learning, saying that technology is a necessity in today’s ever-changing world.
Griffin extended her appreciation to staff and parents for their cooperation with the emergency release on Jan. 25.
At 7 p.m. Feb. 19 there will be a special called meeting for the Board of Education in the staff development room, with a work session to follow.
The next regularly scheduled meeting will be on March 5 in the Commons Meeting Room.
