Thursday, July 2, 2009 — She’s back home after a fun-filled week at the Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant, and to everyone’s delight, Miss Stanly County Hallie Edwards returned home with the Miss Congeniality crown.
The UNC Charlotte sophomore and graduate of South Stanly High was thrilled with her performance, especially her talent presentation, as well as with the support of the good folks from Stanly County.
“I got 30 or so letters and cards from Stanly County with everyone wishing me well,” said Hallie on Wednesday, just days before she leaves for summer school.
“I really want to thank everyone for their support. It meant a lot to me.”
Not only were the folks from home supportive, but Hallie found her fellow contestants to be so as well. As a result, she plans to keep in contact with new friends made at the pageant — Carolyn Mullins, Miss Moore County; Jessica Lackey, Miss Gaston County; and Amanda Sowards, Miss Wake County.
After competing in evening gown on Tuesday and swimsuit on Wednesday, Hallie “nailed” her dance routine as the stage lights shone down on her in the talent competition on Thursday evening.
“I’ve never been as confident with anything in my life as I was going into Thursday night,” said Hallie, who was performing to a big house audience, including Leigh Roush of Albemarle Academy of Dance, who choreographed Hallie’s routine.
“I could not have done any better ... I nailed it.”
To prepare for Miss North Carolina, Hallie devised her own workout routine and diet plan. She walked 3-5 miles per day and worked out with weights to tone her 5-2 body. As a result, Hallie entered the pageant 20 pounds lighter than her basketball playing weight of a year earlier with the Lady Rebel Bulls.
But now, it’s time for Hallie to again hit the books and prepare for her future ... and despite the short transition from center-stage to classroom, Hallie is certain she’ll find time to savor her week at the Miss North Carolina Pageant.
“I had a great time ... I really did.”
