Thursday, July 2, 2009 — Eight winners were chosen of the 17 contestants that participated in the talent show Wednesday night during the Oakboro Fourth of July festivities.
First Baptist Church of Oakboro hosted the show, which was divided into two categories- youth and adult.
In the youth category, 10-year-old Chloe Hallman won first place with her rendition of “Landslide,” which she sang and played guitar. Second place was awarded to 10-year-old Rylie Efird, who sang a medley of “Adeleise” and “Sanctuary,” and 13-year-old Nicole Kippis played “Constantine” on the violin.
In the adult division, Jessie Rushing won first place with her version of “Cowboy Take Me Away.” Second place was awarded to Meisha Rogers and Matt Love, who sang “Free Bird” and played the guitar. Megan Coble won third place with her version of “Every Breath You Take.”
Two people’s choice winners were also chosen. Votes for this category were decided with a $1-a-vote system where the audience could place money in boxes designated for each contestant. The contestant from each division with the highest dollar amount won, but the winning amount was split between both winners, as well as a scholarship fund that will be awarded through First Baptist Church of Oakboro. The winners each received $83, while $165 was added to the scholarship fund.
“Last year, we received approximately $100 for the scholarship fund, so this year we did significantly better,” Wes Tucker, who served as the emcee for the event.
In the youth division, Efird won, and in the adult division, the Christian band Mollynrolly won.
Other contestants for the event included Kyndra Munn, who sang “I Told You So”; Cassy Reames, who sang “Free Bird”; Heidi Foreman, who sang “Fearless”; Courtney Perry, who sang “You Belong to Me”; MacKenzie McCarthy and Riley Burris, who sang and played guitar for “He Goes to Church on Sunday”; Shay Lutwiller, who sang “I Hope You Dance; Jade Lutwiller, who performed a dance and tumble routine, and Ivey Moore, who sang “I’ll Stand By You.”
Adult contestants included Jamie Hathcock, who sang “As If”; and Clint Long, who sang and played guitar for “All the Small Things.”
“There are a lot of talented kids and adults here in the county, and they were showcased tonight,” Tucker said.
